Post Institutional Training

CIFNET is equipped with three fishery training vessels, one each at Kochi, Chennai and Visakhapatnam. These vessels are deployed for conducting regular fishery training operations. In order to provide onboard practical training and for providing qualifying sea service, the  post institutional trainees of the Institute are posted onboard vessels as well as on board vessels of Fishery Survey of India. The post institutional trainees are offered tenure appointment as Apprentice Fitter /Junior  Deckhand/Engine Room Assistant.

1. Apprentice Fitter

The trainees who have completed Marine Fitter Course (2 years duration) from CIFNET are offered post institutional training as Apprentice Fitter for the duration of 6 months in the Marine workshop of the Institute. The trainee is given training in maintenance and repairing of main/ auxiliary diesel engines, electric welding, gas welding etc.  Almost all the trainees who have completed their Marine Fitter Course till the batch 2016 – 2018have been offered as Apprentice Fitter.

2.Engine Room Assistant

The trainees who have completed training as Apprentice Fitter are offered the tenure post of Engine Room Assistant onboard the vessel, for obtaining the required sea service.  The tenure appointment is offered for 6 months initially and extended till he becomes eligible to appear for the Engine Driver of the Fishing Vessel Examination conducted by Mercantile Marine Department. The required sea service is 270 propulsion days.Almost all the trainees who have completed their Marine Fitter Course & Apprentice Fitter service upto the batch 2016 – 2018 have been offered tenure posting  as Engine Room Assistant.

3.Junior Deckhand

The trainees who have completed Vessel Navigator Course (2 years duration) from CIFNET are offered posting  as            Junior Deckhand onboard the vessel. The required sea service for Junior Deckhands is only 9 months. The tenure posting is initially offered for a period of 6 months and extended till he becomes eligible to appear  for the  Mate of Fishing Vessel Examination conducted by MMD.Almost all the trainees who have completed their Vessel Navigator Course till 2017 – 2019 batch have been posted as Junior Deckhand.
